Vinography Images: Lunar Landscape

A full moon hangs over the otherworldly landscape of the Santa Ynez Valley just before dawn, where in the distance, fog hangs over the vineyards of this unique section of the Santa Barbara County coastline. Formed when the Pacific plate smashed into the North American plate, this east-west valley grows a wide range of grapes, from some of the coolest sites for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay near the coast, to Cabernet and Merlot on hillsides farther inland.

Vinography Images: Autumn Intensity

The combination of leaves changing colors for the fall and the last of the evening light turn a vineyard’s colors up to 11 in Sonoma’s Alexander Valley. Their work done for the season, grapevines let their leaves go out in a blaze of glory before entering the dormancy of winter.

Vinography Images: The Good Kind of Fire

Evening light catches the fiery Autumn colors of a vineyard in Temecula Valley. First planted in 1968, Temecula’s high-desert wine country is often overlooked by California wine lovers. Ninety minutes southwest of Los Angeles, the area now hosts more than 40 wineries. While Temecula has its share of tourist trap wineries, some serious wines are being made there by conscientious winemakers unafraid to explore more marginal sites.

Vinography Images: Vineyard Corduroy

From above, the vineyards of the Tepusquet Bench look like corduroy draped in the evening light of the Santa Maria Valley AVA in Santa Barbara. Raised benchland at the foot of the San Rafael Mountains, cut away by the Sisquoc River, the Tepusquet Bench represents some of the earliest plantings of Pinot Noir in Santa Barbara wine country, dating back to the early 1960s.

Vinography Images: All The Colors

A glorious sunset casts enough light to electrify a vineyard showing its fall colors at the crest of a hill at Margerum’s Honea Vineyard in Santa Barbara County. In 2016 Margerum signed a 20-year lease for the 18-acre Honea Vineyard, which it is using to produce Rhône grape varieties.

Vinography Images: Alexander the Great

Terraced vineyards show off their full autumn colors in Alexander Valley in Sonoma County. I think that Alexander Valley may be one of California’s most under-appreciated wine growing regions. Long overshadowed by Sonoma’s Coastal Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, the Bordeaux blends (or even straight Cabernet Sauvignon) from Alexander Valley have never been better, and some easily rival those of the more famous neighboring region to the southeast.

Sunset turns the sky to gold above vineyards that hold a similar hue in autumn near Solvang in the Santa Ynez Valley of Santa Barbara County. Vineyards throughout the state are donning their seasonal colors as harvest winds its way to a close.

Vinography Images: Lines of Light

The sun catches telephone lines and the tops of vineyard rows in the early morning at Gallo’s Two Rock Vineyard outside of Cotati in Sonoma County. Gallo owns more than 20,000 acres of vineyards in California, and many recent additions to their portfolio have been more premium coastal vineyards.

Vinography Images: First Light

The first rays of morning light strike a vineyard in the Fort Ross-Seaview AVA, high on the northern coast of Sonoma County. Home to only a handful of wineries, this small growing area overlooking the chilly Pacific Ocean produces some of the most profound Pinot Noirs made in California, and (insider tip here) the best Pinotage made in the Western Hemisphere.

Vinography Images: The Coming Colors

Autumn colors will soon be showing up in vineyards throughout northern California, as they are here in the Gainey Vineyard in Santa Barbara County. Once harvest is complete, the days continue to shorten, and temperatures begin dropping, grapevines head into their dormancy period, as they need to do nothing save absorb moisture and nutrients until Spring tells them it’s time to start waking up.
