Join Woodinville Wine Country On The Patio – Here’s Who Is Open

On July 23rd, Gov. Jay Inslee and Secretary of Health John Wiesman announced changes to “Safe Start,” Washington’s phased approach to reopening. The changes target activities that data have shown provide a higher risk of COVID-19 exposure.

Here are some highlights of what this means for Woodinville Wine Country:

RESTAURANTS & BARS

  • Restaurant guidance will now require parties to be members of the same household in order to dine indoors. Outdoor dining and take-away remains available for small parties from different households.
  • Table size for dine-in in Phase 3 will be reduced to five individuals and occupancy reduced from 75% to 50%.
  • Restaurants must also close gaming and social areas, such as pool tables, dart boards and video games.
  • Bars will be closed for indoor service, but can continue outdoor service. Alcohol service inside of restaurants must end by 10 p.m.

WINERIES & TASTING ROOMS

  • Wineries must cease indoor on-premise service. Customers may continue to make/pick up orders and pay at the counter following all social distancing rules.
  • Alcohol service must end by 10 PM
  • Outdoor service is allowed with proper social distancing measures in place.

Covid-19 FAQ’s and Resource Center

FAQ COVID-19 Woodinville Wine Country Re-Opening

How do I know what wineries and tasting rooms are open?

King County Executive Dow Constantine, in consultation with Public Health – Seattle & King County leaders, announced that pending state approval, King County will begin to re-open some business activity with limited or modified openings for a number of sectors.

NOTE: June 3: King County submitted our application for the modified phase of the Safe Start reopening plan. Once submitted, it will likely take several days to be approved by the state. We will issue updates as we have them once the application process is underway.

Working with community, business, and government partners – including the County Council and Board of Health leadership – King County Executive Dow Constantine announced that the county is prepared to move forward to allow limited or modified openings for several business sectors and personal activities.

King County has not yet met key criteria to enter Phase 2 of the Safe Start plan and case counts are still unstable, so it will move forward with a modified approach, including partial re-opening of the following businesses and activities:

  • Gatherings
    • Only allowed outdoor of 5 or fewer people outside the household
  • In-store Retail
    • 15 percent of building occupancy
    • Indoor services limited to 30 minutes
  • Restaurants
    • No indoor dining allowed
    • Outdoor dining is permitted but seating at 50 percent of existing outdoor capacity.

See the full list of Phase 1.5 activities here.

Should I make appointments?

Most tasting rooms will be appointment-only. Because of the fluidity with the reopening phases, you will need to call or visit the websites of the tasting rooms you want to visit in advance to obtain current visitor information.

Do I need to wear a mask?

Tasting room employees are required to wear masks and the State of WA highly encourages visitors to put on masks when entering tasting rooms. Many tasting rooms will ask you to wear a mask, call to confirm.

How will social distancing be implemented?

Social distancing protocols at tastings rooms will be in place both inside and outside. During WA State’s modified Phase of 1.5, tastings and dining will only be allowed outside. During Phase 2, you won’t see tasting bar seating, but do expect to see more tables separated by a minimum of six feet throughout tasting rooms, and more use of outdoor space.

Can I bring a group?

Associated groups for social distancing will be limited to 5 people. An associated group doesn’t have to be from the same household. You can create an associated group with friends or other people you are traveling with. Please note that many wineries will be limiting group size to fewer than 5 people so you need to confirm group limits with each winery.

How will service be different?

You can expect more pre-poured wine flights, limited wine bar service, and more seated tastings. What will not be different is the genuine hospitality that wine lovers have come to associated with Woodinville Wine Country.

What about restaurants?

Restaurants, by county, will be allowed to offer outdoor, in-person dining  as soon as the King/Snohomish County applications for the modified phase of the Safe Start reopening plan have been submitted and approved. Not all restaurants are opening at the same time, so again, call to confirm.

Can tasting rooms still serve food?

Please check with each tasting room ahead of visiting.

Will wineries accept cash?

Many wineries will be moving toward touch-less payment options. If you want to pay with cash we suggest you confirm ahead of time with the tasting rooms you plan to visit.

Northwest Wine: A Case to be Made for Sweet Wines During Any Course

Tri-City Herald by Eric Degerman
at Great Northwest Wine
February 4, 2020

As much as some hate to admit it, Americans like sweet wine. It helps explain why some of the most popular red table wines in the U.S. include a fair bit of residual sugar.

Tim Hanni, one of the most affable, approachable and studious Masters of Wine in the world, pulls on this thread throughout his fascinating book on sensory studies titled “Why You Like The Wines You Like.”

“Our research confirms the people who prefer sweet wines unabashedly declare that they want wine that is sweet, not just off-dry or slightly sweet, and the reticence of the wine industry to employ the word sweet as a descriptor to this segment is unfounded,” he writes. Northwest Wine: Many regional reasons to say ‘Yay!’ to Chardonnay

Tri-City Herald – By Eric Degerman at Great Northwest Wine
January 28, 2020

Merely by typing the word Chardonnay too many wine consumers will turn the page or close the window, but Chardonnay remains America’s most purchased bottle of wine.

And as recently as a year ago, research supported the optimism that interest in the noble white grape of Burgundy is substantial. Silicon Valley Bank in the Bay Area accurately predicted Chardonnay would be in “particularly strong demand” for 2018.

In Washington state, Chardonnay trailed only Cabernet Sauvignon in terms of grapes crushed in 2018. There were 7,403 acres of Chardonnay planted in the Evergreen State, which is 13 percent of the state’s 58,000 acres of vines in the ground.

Read the entire article and list of Chardonnay’s that includes Woodinville’s own Maryhill Winery Tasting Room & Bistro 2017 Chardonnay, Columbia Valley, $17: Out of all the years and Platinums awards, this signals the first time that Richard Batchelor has earned one for America’s favorite wine — Chardonnay. The influence of French oak makes this come across as a reserve style at a nice price. Its theme of Granny Smith apple and pear makes room for some butterscotch and toast, capped by a long lemon/lime finish… on Tri-City Herald
