Vinography Images: Dawning of Spring

The rows of vineyards glow an emerald green in the light of dawn in Sonoma’s Dry Creek Valley. A heavy dose of rain this winter will ensure lots of new growth on, and around, the vines as Spring unfolds.

Vinography Images: Santa Lucia Rainlands

Fog hangs heavy across the Salinas Valley, just above the tops of the vineyards of the Santa Lucia Highlands, which rise up the alluvial hillsides of the Santa Lucia Mountains. Today, amidst yet another wave of rainfall, the Salinas River is expected to potentially burst its banks, temporarily turning the entire Monterey Peninsula into an island.

Zinfandel vines hunkered down for the winter are seen through a cold morning mist in Alexander Valley. Sonoma County plays host to some exceptionally old vineyards of Zinfandel, some of which are found in Alexander Valley. These days, they are a rarity, as more and more acreage gets converted to the more lucrative Cabernet Sauvignon.

Vinography Images: Mind the Gap

Weather rolls across the valley floor of the Petaluma Gap AVA, as seen from Keller Estate in Sonoma County. Defined largely by the effects of coastal wind influence, the Petaluma Gap AVA was established in 2017 and includes a slice of southernmost Sonoma County and northern Marin County, stretching from the Pacific Coast inland to the Carneros AVA.

Vinography Images: Winter Colors

A winter storm darkens the sky behind the rows of vineyards that line the road through Happy Canyon in Santa Barbara’s wine country. Happy Canyon AVA, tucked into the corner of the Santa Ynez Valley, is one of California’s smallest growing areas, but also one of its most versatile. The cool westen reaches of the canyon grow Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, while the warmer eastern side ripens Cabernet and Merlot.

Vinography Images: Lunar Landscape

A full moon hangs over the otherworldly landscape of the Santa Ynez Valley just before dawn, where in the distance, fog hangs over the vineyards of this unique section of the Santa Barbara County coastline. Formed when the Pacific plate smashed into the North American plate, this east-west valley grows a wide range of grapes, from some of the coolest sites for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay near the coast, to Cabernet and Merlot on hillsides farther inland.

Vinography Images: The Good Kind of Fire

Evening light catches the fiery Autumn colors of a vineyard in Temecula Valley. First planted in 1968, Temecula’s high-desert wine country is often overlooked by California wine lovers. Ninety minutes southwest of Los Angeles, the area now hosts more than 40 wineries. While Temecula has its share of tourist trap wineries, some serious wines are being made there by conscientious winemakers unafraid to explore more marginal sites.

Vinography Images: Vineyard Corduroy

From above, the vineyards of the Tepusquet Bench look like corduroy draped in the evening light of the Santa Maria Valley AVA in Santa Barbara. Raised benchland at the foot of the San Rafael Mountains, cut away by the Sisquoc River, the Tepusquet Bench represents some of the earliest plantings of Pinot Noir in Santa Barbara wine country, dating back to the early 1960s.

Vinography Images: All The Colors

A glorious sunset casts enough light to electrify a vineyard showing its fall colors at the crest of a hill at Margerum’s Honea Vineyard in Santa Barbara County. In 2016 Margerum signed a 20-year lease for the 18-acre Honea Vineyard, which it is using to produce Rhône grape varieties.

Vinography Images: Alexander the Great

Terraced vineyards show off their full autumn colors in Alexander Valley in Sonoma County. I think that Alexander Valley may be one of California’s most under-appreciated wine growing regions. Long overshadowed by Sonoma’s Coastal Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, the Bordeaux blends (or even straight Cabernet Sauvignon) from Alexander Valley have never been better, and some easily rival those of the more famous neighboring region to the southeast.
